While trapping with his friends, "Jed" (Victor Mature) discovers an Oregon army fort where the captain (Guy Madison) suggests they become scouts. “Jed” is hoping for a chance to marry and settle down, and this seems like a promising opportunity. However, he sets his sights on someone beyond his reach – the colonel’s wife (Anne Bancroft), who has recently arrived from her home base which was destroyed by Sioux warriors under "Red Cloud." The colonel (Robert Preston) quickly proves himself inexperienced, not only in matters of romance but also when it comes to confronting these native people who are far more skilled at warfare. “Jed” and the captain attempt to advise him, but perhaps the outcome is already clear. Mature carries the film adequately during his appearances, though he isn't on screen as much as one might like, preventing it from escaping a predictable storyline—combining romantic elements with internal conflicts while lacking sufficient action sequences involving bows and arrows. When those moments do occur, they are exciting, culminating in an ending that highlights the fact that the Sioux didn’t initiate these confrontations; they primarily sought to be left alone. The film looks acceptable, and the performances and script are serviceable enough for a decent viewing experience, but I doubt it will stick with me.
