Ridley Scott’s *The Last Duel* has quickly become a highlight in my appreciation of his filmography, largely thanks to Jodie Comer's truly impressive and deeply affecting performance—easily among the best acting I’ve seen this year. Adam Driver, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck are all very good, but Comer really inhabits the role of Marguerite de Carrouges, portraying her bravery against a backdrop of considerable anguish within what is a weighty and often disturbing account based on real events. The film's storytelling approach, which unfolds from different viewpoints, works well enough to sidestep any predictable problems that come with repeating elements. The production values are strong and will likely be recognized during awards season, particularly Harry Gregson-Williams’ musical score. And the final duel itself is an exceptionally tense scene, rewarding viewers for their investment with a fulfilling resolution. I'd recommend seeing it in theaters if you can." Rating: A-
