Vincent McEveety directed The Last Day, which was written collaboratively by Jim Byrnes, Steve Fisher, and A.C. Lyles—who also produced. Richard Widmark, Barbara Rush, Robert Conrad, Richard Jaeckel, Tim Matheson, Christopher Connelly, Tom Skerritt, and Loretta Swit appear in the film; Jerrold Immel composed the music, and Robert B. Hauser was responsible for the cinematography. Harry Morgan provides narration. The movie recounts the occurrences leading up to, and encompassing, the Dalton Gang’s attempt to rob two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville, Kansas, on October 5th, 1892. Following some initial credits that alternate between playful imagery and serious photographs, the film focuses on developing its characters, concentrating on the three days preceding the robbery. This allows viewers to become acquainted with the members of the Dalton Gang, their strategies, flaws, ambitions, relationships, and egos (Bob Dalton aspires to surpass Jesse James). “Get yourself killed for a town that doesn't want you?" Back in Coffeyville, retired gunslinger Will Spence (Widmark) plays a central role. He has established a life with his wife Betty (Rush), but Bob Dalton (Conrad) wants him out of the way. As soon as word spreads around town about the Daltons’ presence, people become anxious and start reminding Spence of his past, believing he's responsible for the impending danger. Again, we get to know the main figures in Coffeyville, with a large-scale brawl serving as an exciting distraction. The film builds toward the infamous day in Western history. The actual events took approximately thirteen minutes, and this cinematic version is quite close to that length—it’s remarkable! The tension during the robberies is like a tightly wound spring, and then the violence erupts, with numerous shoot-outs and impressive stunts; every minute is worth the wait. It requires some patience for its first hour, after which it quickens its pace and ultimately delivers an action-packed experience complete with gunfire. There are certainly themes present, as well as adherence to genre conventions, but this film is historically educational, thrilling, and features strong performances from a talented cast. It's one of the better TV Westerns; try to see it if you have the opportunity. 7/10
