Peter McGinn on The Last Bus

10/10 · Nov 19, 2021

The film unfolds deliberately, with a lack of significant excitement. This becomes apparent simply from reading what other people have said about it—the criticisms frequently mention boredom and a sense that nothing occurs. It’s possibly why there's such a large audience for movies packed with constant action; many viewers prefer straightforward narratives where conflicts arise and are resolved through violence. Such films are more suitable when socializing or multitasking while watching, and I apologize, but I seem to have gotten carried away. Timothy Spall delivers another excellent performance, and it’s simple to overlook the fact that he's three decades younger than the character he portrays. The supporting cast is quite good as well. The lines spoken generally feel authentic. While I’m not convinced the film fully explores the connection with social media, that seems like a minor point. It functions very effectively as an in-depth look at an ordinary man, incorporating details about his marriage through carefully revealed flashbacks. A highlight for me is how consistently they portray Spall's older character. He begins as something of a grumpy person, and remains so even after interactions with others reveal the person beneath his exterior. It would have been simple to transform him into an overly cheerful individual by the end, influenced by the kindness he receives, but he maintains his established personality throughout. The film is full of subtle details; it might be too subdued for some viewers, but perfectly suited for those like myself.
