John Chard on The Last Boy Scout

8/10 · Apr 5, 2020

It’s remarkable how capable a dancer can be as a detective. The collaboration between Shane Black, who wrote the screenplay, and Tony Scott, who directed, makes it unsurprising that "The Last Boy Scout" delivers intense action sequences and sharp dialogue. The story follows Bruce Willis portraying a private investigator whose protected witness (Halle Berry) is killed, which leads him and the victim's boyfriend—a former football player (Damon Wayans)—to team up and investigate. Their search reveals connections to powerful figures in professional football. While there are echoes of "Die Hard," categorizing it simply as a copycat action film feels inaccurate. Those familiar with Shane Black’s work understand that the plot takes a backseat to the action and dialogue, especially when Tony Scott is at the helm. This might be Black's most overlooked writing credit (despite its success at the box office), as his tried-and-true buddy cop dynamic—so effectively presented in "Lethal Weapon"—truly stands out here. It’s arguably Wayans’ finest performance and showcases Willis’ understated acting style. The film leans heavily into a male perspective, so female viewers who aren't drawn to the actors might find the portrayal of women disappointing. Nevertheless, it is an exciting experience both visually and in terms of its dialogue. The movie is entertaining and thrilling; prepare yourself for what unfolds. 8/10
