It’s an acceptable film, though I doubt I’ll revisit it, and I can’t really suggest it unless you’re a devoted Joey King admirer. Perhaps my judgment is skewed, but she seems miscast in these typical high school scenarios unless the project has the quality of "Riverdale" or "The Act." The movie feels insignificant and trivial, missing the enjoyment and appeal that usually come with coming-of-age narratives. It draws from the original film (and successfully incorporates some of its elements) and relies on familiar teen plot devices which ultimately resolve to “communicate better.” These situations resemble adult relationships but are set within a high school context with adolescent reasoning. Much of what’s presented feels either low-budget or hollow, relying heavily on Joey King's performance to carry the weight. Maisie Richardson-Sellers ("Legends of Tomorrow") is also capable of improving the scenes she’s in, though her character seems restricted by a limited role. There are some pleasant moments, but I didn’t find myself particularly drawn into the central romance, and I felt sorry for the best friend's girlfriend because she behaved poorly toward him, essentially treating him like just a friend. It probably won’t deliver what you experienced with the initial film, and there are far superior romantic comedies available, though this one isn’t a complete waste of time either.
