Dark Jedi on The King's Man

4/10 · Jun 27, 2022

It’s hard to say anything positive about this film; it felt remarkably different from other movies, and not for the better. In fact, I find myself agreeing with the critics at Rotten Tomatoes—a site I usually dislike—who gave it a negative rating, which is quite unusual for me. As a movie on its own, I might have given it a higher mark, but considering it’s part of the Kingsman series, it was disappointing. The film establishes a noticeably different tone compared to previous installments; it's consistently dark and somber. The story, which reimagines historical events surrounding World War One and the Russian Revolution, is frankly absurd. While the earlier Kingsman movies weren't perfect, this revision of history just doesn’t work—particularly given its manipulation of events that caused immense suffering in modern times. The charm and appeal of the previous films have largely vanished. I couldn’t tell if the filmmakers were attempting to be serious or comedic, but they fail at both. The Duke of Oxford's excessive protectiveness of his son and his pacifist stance throughout most of the movie became tiresome. The eventual fate of his son was predictable, though the way it played out felt like an intentional provocation designed to frustrate viewers. It was incredibly frustrating. Then there’s Rasputin—the entire sequence involving him swung between being ridiculous and unpleasant. The Duke's maid/nurse was a pleasant element, even if the actor didn’t quite deliver a compelling performance. I also question how believable this “network of domestic servants” really is. There were moments of action that weren’t terrible, especially toward the end when the Duke finally seemed to get his act together and abandon his pacifist views. However, I'd exclude most of the World War scenes from any praise; they were simply gloomy, depressing, and occasionally unrealistic and silly. Ultimately, this movie deviates so significantly from its predecessors that it’s difficult to enjoy. It wasn’t very entertaining to watch, and it remained bleak for much of the runtime. The events leading up to World War One and the Russian Revolution felt like a series of one disaster after another. The only truly positive aspect was the founding of the Kingsman agency at the film's conclusion. The synopsis suggests the movie would focus on the creation of the Kingsman agency, and I had hoped for more content centered around that actual establishment. Instead, it’s two hours of drawn-out, often gloomy, sometimes silly drama, followed by less than two minutes where the Duke of Oxford announces the agency's founding—it wasn't what I expected at all.
