After several postponements from its intended November 2019 debut, Matthew Vaughn’s “The King’s Man” marks the third installment in the "Kingsman" film franchise. This story explores the beginnings of the organization devoted to maintaining peace and preventing global conflicts from worsening. Set in Europe before World War I, the movie follows wealthy pacifist Orlando Oxford (Ralph Finnes) as he tries to guide his son Conrad (Harris Dickinson), who is still grieving the death of his mother years earlier while on a Red Cross mission. When war breaks out, Conrad wants to join the fight, but his father manages to prevent it, wanting to shield him from the brutality of conflict. Simultaneously, a clandestine group has been scheming to initiate the war and control its course, with one agent, Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), playing a significant role due to his sway over Russia’s Czar. As time goes on and the war progresses, Conrad and Orlando find themselves increasingly divided and drawn in different ways, triggering a series of events that threaten the world's stability. The film occasionally feels more subdued compared to its predecessors, but the action sequences are enjoyable, blending humor and violence characteristic of the series. The performances are strong, and using historical events while presenting them from an unusual viewpoint enhanced the viewing experience. While there’s a good amount of comedy in the movie, it also dedicates considerable time to developing characters and explaining the plot, which can create pauses between action scenes. However, the compelling narratives and personalities keep viewers engaged. The film establishes opportunities for additional stories within this earlier timeline, suggesting that future films might follow suit—a direction that would be welcome, as the movie provides what fans have come to anticipate from the franchise. 4 stars out of 5
