Sterling Hayden may be listed first, but Marie Windsor truly commands attention as "Sherry." She portrays the avaricious and overbearing wife of "George," played by Elisha Cook Jr., who holds a position at the racetrack’s cashier's office alongside “Mike” (Joe Sawyer), tending bar. These characters are central to an ambitious plot to steal two million dollars during a major race day. Former convict "Johnny" (Hayden) is the mastermind behind this operation, which also involves a corrupt police officer named "Randy" (Ted de Corsia), a skilled shooter “Nikki” (Timothy Carey), and financier "Unger," recognizable from other roles. The plan necessitates careful preparation; diversions are arranged, and everything seems on track. However, complications arise when the talkative "George," attempting to secure his wife's affection—and her money—reveals details to his lover "Val" (Vince Edwards), leading to some deceitful maneuvering. The film’s structure resembles a jigsaw puzzle; the narrative shifts between different story elements, timelines, and characters before gradually converging into an engaging eighty-minute crime drama. While I found the conclusion somewhat disappointing, the acting is consistently strong throughout this tightly directed and well-scored story. There's also a memorable and amusing action sequence featuring Kola Kwariani’s performance. It’s definitely worth seeing.
