The arrival of two professional killers at a small-town diner sets in motion events centered around a former boxer known as "the Swede" (Burt Lancaster), one of their intended targets. After persuading the diner owner that the Swede won't appear, the men pursue him, while his companion, who had been held captive, races to warn him; however, he makes no attempt to escape, seemingly accepting his predetermined fate—a detail established early on. The question arises: why didn’t he flee? It is revealed that he carried a life insurance policy, prompting investigator "Reardon" (Edmond O'Brien) to investigate the beneficiary and uncover a narrative of theft, deception, and double-dealing, in which the character of "Kitty" (Ava Gardner) plays a key role. This film stands out as an excellent example of noir cinema, showcasing strong performances from Lancaster and O’Brien as flashbacks gradually reveal the truth, with assistance from “Lt. Lubinsky” (Sam Levene). Ava Gardner's presence is limited but impactful; she skillfully manipulates those around her, orchestrating events with a practiced ease. The film unfolds at a deliberate pace, allowing the story to develop organically and contributing to its overall dramatic power—an expansion of Hemingway’s original short story. The cinematography is striking, employing light and shadow for dramatic effect, while Miklós Rósza's score enhances the film’s gritty atmosphere. While this marked Burt Lancaster's initial significant screen appearance, Edmond O'Brien carries much of the narrative weight, delivering a commendable performance.
