The movie offered plenty of action sequences within a deliberate, graceful presentation. This was my initial exposure to Hong Kong cinema; John Woo, the director, would later become known internationally and even work in Hollywood productions. Overall, I enjoyed the film. While I’m not consistently drawn to action movies, this one seemed to successfully combine thrilling action—which felt more powerful than what's typically seen in American films—with a well-constructed story. The narrative centers on a hired killer who begins safeguarding a bar singer after unintentionally causing her blindness. His situation becomes complicated as he must eliminate a mob boss and evade the police, who are aware of the connection between the singer and the killer and begin monitoring her. Chow Yun-Fat stars in the leading role; he’s the only actor I recall having seen before, though I can't place where. He is captivating and forceful, portraying a character who is both formidable and capable of eliciting audience empathy. Danny Lee, as a police inspector, and Sally Yeh, playing the singer, also deliver commendable performances. The film’s main draw is its dynamic action. Considerable effort went into creating striking fight and shooting scenes, making the stunt performers and special effects artists deserving of recognition. The production values are high with detailed sets and costumes, and the cinematography possesses a distinctive visual quality common to Eastern films—characterized by rich, vibrant colors that are clearly emphasized. Running for about ninety minutes, the film's rhythm is somewhat slow, suggesting some unnecessary length in the script, which represents my biggest reservation.
