It brought back memories of Baz Luhrmann’s “Sunscreen” because Michael Fassbender’s character offers some similar life lessons, though not with the same cleverness. The rest of the movie, however, isn’t likely to stick around in your memory for long. His carefully orchestrated killing goes wrong and he accidentally eliminates a schoolteacher instead of his intended victim, forcing him to escape. You'd think someone like that would be unflappable, but this guy is actually quite anxious on his journey to safety in the Dominican Republic. Upon arrival, he finds things aren’t as secure as he thought; his friend "Magdala" (Sophie Charlotte) has been badly hurt during an attack on his secluded house. Driven by a desire for retribution, he begins searching for those responsible and decides to confront the wealthy client who hired him. He doesn't have access to a directory of contacts, but his investigation is surprisingly straightforward and violent. There are occasional fight sequences, a dog seems excessively medicated, and the ending – with a brief appearance by Tilda Swinton – lacks any real threat or refinement. Fassbender is certainly appealing to watch, but beyond that, the film feels incredibly unoriginal; it's like a second-rate relative of "The Mechanic" (2011), and ultimately not very enjoyable.
