This is certainly David Fincher's most direct and uncomplicated film to date, and that’s both a strength and a weakness. Michael Fassbender delivers an engaging performance with a somber voiceover, and the cinematography and music create a palpable sense of suspense, all handled exceptionally well by the director. However, the story feels shallow, and the characters are never given names, which prevents any real emotional connection. The plot also follows a predictable pattern without offering much in the way of subplots, ultimately making it difficult to become invested in this world. It’s more something to appreciate than truly enjoy. Rating: B-
