Burt Lancaster takes on both starring and directing roles in this film about a good-hearted wanderer, known as "Big Eli," and his young son, “Little Eli” (Donald MacDonald), traveling to Texas with the goal of earning a living. During their trip, he acquires an indentured servant named "Susie" (Diana Lynn), which adds another layer to their already unfolding experiences. He struggles with personal issues involving women, alcohol, and a particularly unpleasant Walter Matthau ("Bodine"). The film is visually striking, and Lancaster’s playful personality shines through. However, the movie does overstay its welcome; it loses momentum as the romantic aspects shift abruptly from humorous antagonism into sentimentality. Matthau's performance and his prop are memorable moments in film history, and young MacDomald handles his role effectively. Those who appreciate Burt Lancaster’s work will likely enjoy this, but I personally lost interest around the midpoint because its initial energy doesn’t last.
