As the Civil War neared its conclusion, three women found themselves struggling to stay alive. Set during the Carolinas Campaign of spring 1865, "The Keeping Room" (2014) follows two sisters and a former slave—played by Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld, and Muna Otaru—who had been weathering the conflict at their isolated farm. Their situation changes when some Union soldiers arrive, forcing them to rely on intelligence to endure. This deliberately paced Western, though set in the Eastern United States, benefits from a skilled cast, capable direction, and an authentic, bleak atmosphere. It shares qualities with films like "Pharaoh's Army" (1995) and “Echoes of War” (2015), as well as “War Flowers” (2012). However, unlike that other film, "The Keeping Room" demonstrates a high level of production quality considering its limited budget.
