It’s hard to think of another movie, animated or live-action, that manages so well to combine its narrative with its music. This film tells Rudyard Kipling's story about "Mowgli," a boy left alone in the Indian wilderness who finds refuge and is brought up by wolves. As Mowgli approaches adulthood, “Bagheera,” a wise panther, believes he should be reunited with people of his own kind, but “Baloo,” a friendly bear, disagrees and embarks on some entertaining jungle escapades with the young man-cub—including several close calls with "Shere Khan," an incredibly frightening and cynical tiger, and "Kaa," the mesmerizing python. The actors voicing the characters are excellent; Phil Harris’s portrayal of the bear and George Sanders's performance as the tiger stand out particularly. Louis Prima contributes one of Disney’s finest songs as “Louie,” the King of the Apes, and the Sherman brothers offer many more memorable musical numbers. The animation is incredibly detailed, and the writing is genuinely funny—this is truly a film everyone should see.
