Considering its apparent origins, the film isn’t terrible; if it concluded on a darker note, possessed a more somber feel, featured more turtlenecks, and had been released earlier, it likely would have resonated with audiences even greater. The current version feels contemporary, resulting in increased action sequences, enhanced visual effects, a diminished narrative focus, reduced atmosphere, and a more upbeat resolution. Despite this, it stands out as one of Michael Bay's stronger efforts, potentially his finest work. It’s disappointing that the film underperformed financially because its success could have guided him toward incorporating greater substance into his projects. The movie came remarkably close to achieving the status of a bleak, turtleneck-clad dystopian masterpiece blending 1970s sensibilities with modern effects and a positive ending. Nevertheless, for what it was made in 2005, it surpasses expectations.
