A reporter who came from Britain but now lives in America (played by Michael Caine) gets sent to investigate disappearances happening around the Bermuda Triangle. He goes with his son, and they stumble upon a hidden place… you’ll have to see it yourself to learn more. David Warner is also in the film. “The Island” from 1980 was penned by Peter Benchley, who wrote “Jaws,” and adapted from one of his books. He had a hand in writing the scripts for "Jaws" (1975), “The Deep” (1977) and this film, but its poor performance at theaters led to him stopping his screenwriting work, even though he continued to write novels. While neither “The Deep” nor this movie is as good as “Jaws,” they’re still worth watching if you feel like seeing an underwater adventure/thriller that's usually believable. The film centers on a father and son trying to survive something extraordinary while they are alone in the remote West Indies. It touches on themes of being cut off from others, going backward, and families marrying within themselves, but it could have been more interesting if there had been more time or money to develop those ideas further. Fortunately, the final part of the movie is pretty great and makes watching worthwhile. Australian actress Angela Punch McGregor does a good job as Beth. The film’s length is 1 hour and 49 minutes, and it was filmed primarily on Antigua, which sits 250 miles east of Puerto Rico, and Abaco in the Bahamas. GRADE: B-
