It’s the nineteen fifties, and a boy named Hogarth Hughes encounters an unexpected visitor—a massive iron man—from another world. This is a charming animated version of Ted Hughes' popular 1968 book "The Iron Man." Coming at a time when Cold War anxieties and science fiction were widespread, the film explores these ideas while also teaching about friendship, animosity, mortality, and the importance of peace. With Brad Bird directing and Tim McCanilies and Andy Brent Forrester writing the script, The Iron Giant is an unusual animated movie that entertains adults just as much as children. While the giant himself, with all his impressive weapons, understandably grabs your attention, it's his internal struggle that truly gives the film its emotional depth. With the help of his friend Hogarth, the iron being chooses to not be a destructive force, but those in power, predictably, won’t allow it. The pervasive mindset of many science fiction films from the nineteen fifties—that anything unfamiliar should simply be destroyed—is something that Ted Hughes and the filmmakers here portray brilliantly. This is a smart and thoughtful animated film, certainly among the best to come out recently, earning a rating of 9/10. The voice cast includes Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr., Vin Diesel, James Gammon, Christopher McDonald, M. Emmet Walsh, and Eli Marienthal.
