While perhaps not his absolute finest work, this film serves as another demonstration of Martin Scorsese's exceptional filmmaking abilities. Robert De Niro gives what feels like his strongest performance in quite some time, Al Pacino is captivatingly intense, and Joe Pesci’s return to acting is a genuine highlight. The Irishman tells a lengthy but well-crafted story centered on themes of companionship and the passage of time. Though Thelma Schoonmaker's editing is among the best seen recently and helps with the film's considerable length, it still feels drawn out at times. I also thought Anna Paquin’s role could have carried more weight within the narrative. The visual effects used to digitally age the actors are remarkable, though they require a little adjustment initially. Rating: A-
