John Chard on The Invisible Man Returns

7/10 · Oct 1, 2018

A pleasing follow-up that avoids feeling phoned in. Geoffrey Radcliffe (played by Vincent Price) finds himself wrongly accused of killing his brother and subsequently takes a substance to render himself unseen so he can escape. However, as he attempts to prove his innocence, the drug’s unfortunate consequence—a descent into insanity—begins to jeopardize his efforts. It was unrealistic to expect this film to reach the heights of the original, The Invisible Man (1933), a truly exceptional Universal Studios production that does right by H.G. Wells' novel. Thankfully, instead of being a simple attempt at making money, this sequel establishes its own identity and emerges as an intelligent narrative with touches of both humor and melancholy. John Fulton’s special effects remain impressive for the time, and the film benefits from performances by Cecil Kellaway, Cedric Hardwicke, and Nan Grey, while the ending is satisfying and makes the wait worthwhile. There are minor issues; the true killer's identity is revealed too early, which diminishes the sense of suspense, and director Joe May occasionally allows the tempo to slow down. Nevertheless, these shortcomings don’t prevent the film from achieving its goals as entertainment. It isn’t really horror, but it offers considerable dramatic value, outlandish science, and a cast that makes the story engaging. 7/10
