I had some initial worries when I noticed how many companies produced this film – it seemed like it could easily become chaotic. However, that didn’t happen. The movie combines a variety of animation techniques, showcasing everything from simple 2-D designs to detailed technical illustrations and some stop-motion sequences that were genuinely unusual and charming. It presents a very concise overview of Leonardo da Vinci's life. We begin in Rome, where his patron, Cardinal de Medici, is continually dealing with problems for him because Pope Leo X wants him to focus on something more productive than secretly dissecting corpses! That habit leads him to seek refuge with King Francis I in France. The king asks the master to construct a castle, or perhaps an entirely new city, or some advanced weaponry – likely all of those things. Leonardo isn't particularly responsive to requests, and before long, even his latest supporter starts getting frustrated. Fortunately, he has Princess Marguerite on his side, and eventually gains the hesitant approval of their mother, the Queen. The film can occasionally feel a little disconnected; the artwork is often quite different, but that actually makes the overall project more intriguing and inventive. The drawings brought to mind the opening credits from Tom Riley’s "Da Vinci's Demons" television series – and the story effectively highlights the visionary qualities of a man who literally balanced science, religion, and potential disaster. It could probably be trimmed by about twenty minutes, but once it gets going, there’s plenty of creative action to keep you entertained.
