It's intriguing to imagine Michael Mann directing a movie starring both Russell Crowe and Al Pacino—and remarkably, something close to that idea already exists in The Insider. This film feels like a real gem. Russell Crowe portrays Jeffrey Wigand, a researcher for a major tobacco company who stumbles upon evidence of harmful ingredients being added to their products. Following an appearance on “60 Minutes,” where he shared his findings with Mike Wallace, Wigand’s life takes a difficult turn; he's forced to give up his career, family and standing in the world. Differing from his portrayal in Gladiator, Crowe delivers a strong performance as someone struggling against forces that strip him of his autonomy while confronting powerful corporate wrongdoers. Al Pacino is also very good as Lowell Bergman, the journalist looking into the story. Mann manages to keep this lengthy, two-and-a-half-hour crime drama engaging through thoughtful and detailed storytelling.
