Wuchak on The Innocents

7/10 · Sep 12, 2024

A nun from a Polish convent requests assistance from a French Red Cross worker who is assisting survivors of the concentration camps (Lou de Laâge). It appears that Russian soldiers had previously committed brutal acts at the convent during their takeover of the region some months before. “The Innocents,” released in 2016, draws inspiration from the experiences of Madeleine Pauliac, a doctor working in Poland, who is portrayed as Mathilde Beaulieu (played by Lou) in the film. The movie shares qualities with “Black Narcissus” and “Agnes of God,” although it’s based on actual events. I don't think it reaches the level of the former, but it surpasses the latter. This could be classified as a World War II drama and functions effectively as an authentic period piece. The decision by the screenwriters to incorporate the relationship between the Jewish doctor and the main character was welcome; it adds both historical context and emotional depth to what are otherwise somber events. Lou de Laâge is certainly a standout, a delight to watch, with wonderfully shaped lips. The film’s length is 1 hour and 55 minutes, and filming took place in northeastern Poland, specifically in Morag, Krosno, and Orneta. GRADE: B
