Louis Garrel possesses an undeniable charm that typically makes him enjoyable to watch, and that’s still present here. However, the narrative itself stretches believability just a bit too far! The plot involves Abel accompanying his mother Sylvie to prison—where she teaches acting and has begun a relationship with Michel. Abel is understandably dubious about his mother's impending marriage to an ex-convict, so he and his friend Clémence embark on some rather awkward attempts at surveillance. But Michel isn’t naive; soon, the amateur detectives find themselves entangled in a scheme to steal caviar from a van parked at a gas station. While there are moments of amusement throughout, it leans too heavily into clumsy physical comedy as a source of humor. It functions as both a romance and a family drama that surpasses typical soap opera fare—though only marginally; it feels like witnessing an unfinished segment of the lives of people we don’t truly connect with. Noémie Merlant is a welcome presence and shares good chemistry with her increasingly unfortunate companion, Abel, leading to an ending with some unexpected turns. I did find parts of it entertaining, but ultimately it's pretty unremarkable entertainment, I'm afraid.
