It’s undeniable that Visconti possessed a remarkable ability to craft films characterized by elegance, visual appeal, and refinement – and this production is consistent with that reputation. A striking musical score from Franco Mannino, incorporating elements of classical music, alongside exceptional cinematography from Pasqualiono de Santis, certainly contribute significantly to the film's impact; however, these strengths aren’t sufficient to overcome a fundamentally weak narrative and three noticeably disappointing portrayals. Tullio Hermil portrays "Giancarlo," a superficial and unpleasant man who is married to Laura Antonelli ("Giuliana") and resides in their expansive estate while openly flaunting his alluring mistress, Jennifer O'Neill ("Teresa"). As suspicion arises that his wife has been pursuing her own interests, he naturally begins to experience jealousy and desires what he can no longer possess. The eventual outcome feels predetermined, and despite the lavishness and fashionable atmosphere of the journey, Antonelli’s performance consistently evoked comparisons to Anne Bancroft, though lacking a similar level of polish and allure; O'Neill, while undeniably attractive, seemed as superficial as the character she embodies.
