The film evokes comparisons to both "Batman" and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." as the Parr family attempts to navigate everyday life following the end of their superhero careers due to legal challenges and governmental hesitation. However, a peaceful retirement proves elusive; more than ten years after being forced into hiding, dad Bob is called to a clandestine meeting where he realizes that utilizing his – and his family’s – abilities will be necessary to avert global catastrophe. The storyline isn't particularly fresh or convincing, but the writing and character development are surprisingly effective as the animated story progresses. There’s humor in the conversations suitable for both children and adults, and while it might feel a little lengthy, it’s an energetic story involving spying and science with plenty of devices, family conflicts, and even a formidable villain encased in steel armor. The momentum increases to become quite brisk and enjoyable, building action sequences that lead to an ending which feels somewhat underwhelming – practically begging for another installment. This is best experienced on a large screen and offers some appealing, nostalgic elements related to espionage for viewers over forty.
