John Chard on The Incredible Melting Man

4/10 · Nov 4, 2013

The Incredible Melting Man, penned and directed by William Sachs, features Alex Rebar, Burr DeBenning, and Myron Healey. Arlon Ober composed the music, and Willy Curtis handled the cinematography. Following a space flight to Saturn where he was exposed to radiation, astronaut Steve West finds his body inexplicably beginning to melt. After managing to escape from the hospital, West wanders around looking for people to consume, desperately trying to slow down his melting process. It’s truly as awful as most accounts suggest, though Rick Baker's makeup effects are every bit as impressive as they say! Originally conceived as a horror spoof, it was altered into something resembling actual horror after the studio requested some edits and changes. Watching it makes it quite clear that this was the case. The plot amounts to little more than the titular melting man moving from one location to another while dripping with goo and interacting with a collection of subpar performers. He’s tracked by a friend attempting to assist him, all leading up to an explosion-filled sequence at a power plant where the supposed climactic confrontation takes place. There isn't much you can do with the narrative; after only eight minutes, he begins melting, and once pieces of his body start detaching, it’s obvious that there's no hope for him. The tragic nature of the creature is engaging enough to maintain some interest, assuming you can resist laughing at everything else happening around him during this journey reminiscent of *The Quatermass Experiment*. The scenes set in the power plant are well-shot, the creature’s ultimate end is bleakly sad, and Baker delivers the only genuinely worthwhile aspect of the film. It's a mess on multiple levels! However, it can be enjoyable if you're feeling particularly lenient. 4/10
