Following a surge of power – the “Gamma Bomb” – Edward Norton’s "Banner" needs to figure out how to manage his new abilities, which seem to involve an awful lot of tight clothing! Seeking a solution and evading General "Ross" (William Hurt), he turns to his former girlfriend and the general's daughter, "Betty" (Liv Tyler), for assistance. However, "Ross" is persistent and recruits British operative "Blonsky" (Tim Roth) to assist him. Frustrated by previous defeats, this character decides to gain similar abilities himself, foreshadowing a major confrontation between these two figures of immense strength and unfortunate appearances. It’s acceptable enough to watch, but I've always considered the “Hulk” narratives to be among the least engaging in the comic universe. Norton seems committed to his role, as does Roth, who is consistently good, but Hurt and Tyler don't bring much depth to what feels like a fairly standard fantasy story. The special effects work well, and the explosions are impressive too, yet they fail to coalesce into anything particularly satisfying by the time it ends. It’s definitely a win for the makeup artists, though, and not a great deal else.
