This movie tells a true story—a biographical account of a family’s struggle to survive after they were caught in the Boxing Day Tsunami while staying at the Orchid Resort in Thailand. It’s a well-made example of its genre, featuring strong performances from the cast, notably Tom Holland, who brought an unexpected level of complexity to his character. I typically avoid survival stories, and only chose this one because I was interested in learning more about what happened during that disaster. The actual tsunami event itself felt brief, but the film extended the suffering and sadness considerably, which I found excessive. However, those who appreciate films centered on similar themes will probably find it worthwhile.
