A family’s trip to Thailand for a long-awaited vacation takes an unexpected turn when they arrive in Phuket. What should have been idyllic quickly turns harrowing as an undersea earthquake triggers tsunamis, resulting in widespread devastation and a tragic loss of life—nearly 250,000 people. "Henry" (Ewan McGregor), "Maria" (Naomi Watts), and their children, "Lucas" (Tom Holland), "Simon" (Oaklee Pendergast), and "Thomas" (Samuel Joslin), find themselves directly in the path of the first wave. Against all odds, they manage to stay afloat by grabbing onto floating objects and sturdy trees, though they are separated during the ordeal. The story then focuses on their struggle for survival—"Maria" suffers significant injuries, and with her older, resourceful son "Lucas," she must navigate a landscape transformed into chaos. The rest of the family is scattered elsewhere, all desperately seeking to return home amidst the wreckage left by the receding water. Much of the film avoids dwelling on McGregor’s performance, which isn't particularly strong. The core of the drama centers around the relationship between mother and son as they attempt to reach safety and obtain medical attention. Drawing from a true event, the cinematography powerfully depicts the sheer destructive force of the waves upon these low-lying islands—islands that lacked defenses and were built without consideration for such natural disasters. There’s also an uplifting element to the story; locals and tourists unite in a chaotic but heartfelt effort to assist one another, despite language barriers and differing priorities. The film's rhythm fluctuates between intense action sequences and moments of reflection, effectively conveying the dangers faced by everyone trying to process the destruction. Ultimately, it proved to be a more engaging experience than I initially anticipated.
