The grand themes of existence—life versus death, space against time, destiny and luck—are presented as fundamental cosmic powers. Neil Burger directed The Illusionist, adapting a screenplay by Steven Millhauser from "Eisenheim the Illusionist." Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, Jessica Biel, and Rufus Sewell lead the cast, accompanied by a score from Philip Glass and cinematography by Dick Pope. It’s wonderful to encounter a romantic mystery set in the past, blending magical illusions with political tension. The story centers on Norton as Eisenheim, a magician who reconnects with Sophie (Biel), his childhood sweetheart, only to discover she is betrothed to Crown Prince Leopold (Sewell). Leopold has a questionable reputation, and it doesn't take long before Eisenheim finds himself in the prince’s disfavor. This leads Eisenheim to attempt an extraordinary feat of magic to protect both Sophie and himself. Neil Burger delivers a film that seems to have everything working in its favor. The narrative is strong and full of suspense; fittingly, given the story's focus on illusion, appearances are deceptive. The historical details feel authentic, with locations in the Czech Republic serving as stand-ins for turn-of-the-century Vienna. The production design and costumes accurately reflect the period. Philip Glass’s score is gentle and sad, while Dick Pope’s cinematography is simply beautiful, creating a visual atmosphere that's captivating. The magic tricks are enchanting, which they need to be, as the story hints that Eisenheim might possess genuine supernatural abilities. The narrative may lack historical accuracy, but it remains compelling. Everything leads toward its ultimate reveals, and whether those moments justify the price of admission is key. Thankfully, they do, although personally I would have preferred if the film had concluded a little sooner. Regardless, with understated performances—Paul Giamatti as the police inspector particularly stands out—this is subtle filmmaking that fully engages your emotions for an enjoyable experience. 8/10
