I typically avoid films that lean into surrealism, so I began feeling apprehensive roughly ten minutes in. However, my worries proved unfounded; this turned out to be an unexpectedly enjoyable observational drama. It centers on a group of friends living outside Copenhagen in a house their apparent leader, "Stoffer" (played by Jens Albinus), is intending to sell. Their lifestyle revolves around eating, drinking, using drugs, and casual encounters, but primarily through elaborate scams where they feign ignorance – with differing levels of commitment. This strategy works remarkably well for obtaining free food and money, exploiting the discomfort their actions cause those who simply wish they would disappear! While these schemes are somewhat cynical, they also highlight how incredibly ordinary everyday existence can be. With the arrival of a new member, "Karen" (Bodil Jørgensen) – who we eventually learn carries some significant personal burdens – we’re taken on a couple of hours filled with slapstick and darkly humorous, occasionally outrageous, situations. I didn't connect with “Stoffer,” as he seemed to possess an element of grandiosity, but the rest of the film successfully blends serious themes with silliness, memorable characters with the commonplace, and consistently elicits smiles – even when some moments are almost painful to witness.
