The film unfolds through three separate storylines, yet disappointingly, none manage to truly captivate as it shifts from a potentially fascinating fantasy into something resembling melodrama. Initially, we meet “Jeanne” (Clara Pacini), a troubled young woman who recently escaped her home and unexpectedly finds herself encountering a movie production of “The Snow Queen,” led by the volatile “Cristina” (Marion Cotillard). "Cristina" is far from being someone needing more difficulties in her life, and a third storyline focuses on the film's actual creation. This results in a slow-paced, dimly lit experience that feels rather weak and fails to generate much excitement. While Cotillard does convey a certain chilliness that’s effectively mirrored by the cinematography, as the characters of these two women become increasingly connected, that darkness, mystery, and coldness gets lost within something considerably milder. It seems one intention may be to confuse what's real for both women—and for the audience as well—and we observe the fascinated young “Jeanne/Bianca" becoming even more absorbed in a fairytale than when she initially appeared, but I didn’t sense much depth or energy in their quickly developing connection. The film possesses an atmosphere, though that doesn't really stem from either of the characters or their sparingly delivered lines. For me, it was because I already knew how harsh and exacting Anderson’s original “Snow Queen” was, so Cotillard didn’t have to carry quite as much weight. Maybe I simply wasn’t in the right frame of mind, but I must say I felt let down by this.
