The movie’s final moments are what truly matter, and they almost make up for the preceding hour and forty minutes, which felt like a slow, uninspired story set in the South Seas. Jon Hall portrays "Terangi," who finds himself unjustly imprisoned after protecting himself from an aggressor. The inflexible French Colonial Governor, "DeLaage" – played with unsettling intensity by Daniel Massey – is determined to uphold the law and ensure “Terangi’s” punishment, despite the well-meaning efforts of a talkative, often drunk, Thomas Mitchell as "Dr. Kersaint; C. Aubrey Smith delivers a touching performance as the local priest, "Fr. Paul," alongside Mary Astor as his wife, "Mme. DeLaage." The harsh conditions in the labor camp, overseen by John Carradine, only worsen the young man’s suffering, particularly when his failed attempts to return to his wife, “Marama” (Dorothy Lamour), lead to harsher penalties. There are numerous flaws and illogical aspects within the storyline, but director John Ford does manage to create a sense of suspense. The score by Alfred Newman and the special effects at the very end are exceptional—surprisingly so, given the rest of the film. It’s difficult to endorse the movie as a whole, yet I believe that the conclusion ultimately made experiencing it worthwhile.
