Reno on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2

5/10 · Apr 4, 2016

It felt like an unnecessary addition that dragged on too long. When 'The Hobbit' was stretched into a trilogy, it worked out okay since there were so many characters and details to cover. But this series got lucky just getting the first film off to a strong start, largely thanks to a younger audience. I really enjoyed the second movie, but the third one didn’t live up to expectations; this installment in particular felt completely superfluous. Eighty percent of the plot wrapped up in the previous film, and what remained here was simply an unnecessary finishing touch with an unnecessary lag. It probably would have been a better movie if 'Mockingjay' had just been one film. There are so many odd ways to make money these days; the art of storytelling seems to be disappearing as books get broken into two or three films. This trend needs to end, because book fans appreciate the original story, while someone like me who loves movies is left feeling let down. In this two-hour movie, there were a lot of scenes that just felt like filler meant to pad out the runtime. Because of what I’ve described, the pacing was off, mostly due to the time between the second and third films. The emotional impact didn't land, the action felt weak, and it all seemed rushed toward the end. That final section should have been a climax—what happens after could have been brief, but instead it went on for too long, feeling like the start of an entirely new story. I understand that screenwriters might feel pressured to do this, but I’ve seen split movies like 'Twilight', 'Harry Potter' and others, and this one was the worst by far. Even if you watched all four films back-to-back, the first two would be the highlights, while the last two would likely disappoint because of their slow pace. 5/10
