Lugosi makes an effort in this film, though he struggles to maintain control as the physician who is essentially orchestrating insurance claims related to men who are viciously murdered. The identity of both the killer and the mastermind behind the events becomes apparent early on, so much of the viewing experience involves observing Hugh Williams’ “Insp. Holt” go through the motions of his investigation, attempting to uncover the truth before further deaths occur. His inquiry is later joined by the daughter of one of the victims—"Diana" (Greta Gynt)—which leads him to a school for the blind where Lugosi's "Dr. Orloff" serves as an advisor. The question becomes whether he can piece things together quickly enough. Trimming approximately ten or fifteen minutes could have improved it, but even at seventy-five minutes, the film feels drawn out and lacks sufficient substance to keep viewers engaged in this somber production that unfortunately fails to generate any real suspense. It might have been more effective as a stage performance; it possesses several characteristics of a dependable, though uninspired, one-act play—however, on screen, it’s simply forgettable.
