The movie benefits considerably from solid portrayals given by Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank, though the underlying narrative feels straightforward and moves at a slow pace. Ultimately, to my mind, it appeared to be a superficial combination of different plotlines that didn’t possess any real depth and proved rather disheartening. Hilary Swank portrays Mary Bee Cuddy, who is caring for three women struggling with the psychological challenges of frontier life. Motivated by her faith, she arranges for them to be transferred to a church located further away. Tommy Lee Jones plays George Briggs, a wanderer whom she discovers hanging from a tree; she frees him on the condition that he assists in escorting the women and they begin their dangerous journey. The visuals are striking – effectively showing not only the vastness of the landscape but also the severity of the winter weather they face during their travels. However, this extended trek significantly slows down the film's momentum, and the predictable development of a connection between the two characters after some initial distrust felt awkward to witness. While there are tragic moments, these didn’t have much impact, and by the time I reached the end, it seemed like something essential was absent from the experience. It’s certainly a well-made film with a fitting score composed by Marco Beltrami, but I doubt I'll want to rewatch it.
