Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds), a highly skilled bodyguard, had a comfortable existence as a top professional, earning good money protecting important people around the globe. However, two years later, things have gone wrong and he’s trying to rebuild his career in “The Hitman’s Bodyguard.” The situation becomes difficult when Dukhovich (Gary Oldman), a ruthless dictator accused of war crimes and terrible acts, is about to be released because everyone who could provide evidence against him has been eliminated. The exception is Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson). Darius agrees to testify in exchange for his wife’s freedom (Selma Hayek), knowing he's now a target, and with the help of Interpol Agent Roussel (Elodie Yung), they begin their journey. As you might expect, things don’t go smoothly, and they are forced to run while numerous dangerous assassins pursue them. Uncertain about who she can rely on, Roussel asks for Michael’s assistance despite a history of unresolved problems between them that ended a previous relationship. The complicated dynamic between Michael and Darius, due to their past, doesn't help either. Despite this, Michael and Darius attempt to reach the courtroom, facing numerous perils and humorous moments along the way. Jackson and Reynolds have good chemistry together, and their playful teasing feels genuine. There are more jokes than I anticipated, but it’s primarily an action film with intense, funny, and captivating sequences, particularly a lengthy chase and fight scene through Amsterdam's canals and shopping areas. Some might consider this movie just another take on the classic buddy cop formula, but the talented cast and the successful combination of humor and action make it a welcome surprise and one of my favorite films from 2017. It was an extremely entertaining experience and among the best movies that summer. If you enjoy action, comedies, or seeing Jackson and Reynolds together, be sure to see this film. 4 stars out of 5.
