William Talman’s performance as Myers really stands out in this thriller about two fishermen who agree to give a stranger a ride, only to find themselves at the mercy of a dangerous man with a gun. He insists they drive and then walk across mostly desert land toward a port where he plans to disappear—and also reveals his intention to kill them once he arrives. Ida Lupino handled the direction of this unsettling drama effectively, and Edmond O'Brien and Frank Bowen work well together as the men held against their will in what is fundamentally a tight story centered on just three characters. The plot does stretch believability at points; there are moments when they could easily overpower him, and these instances eventually lessen the sense of danger. It starts to feel like the heroes will prevail, which lessens the suspense rather rapidly. It’s a very dark and atmospheric film that isn't shown much anymore, but it remains worth seeing nearly 70 years after its release.
