Drawing from a true account, “The Highwaymen” (1983) follows two former Texas Rangers—Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson—who are asked to hunt down and kill Bonnie & Clyde in 1934 when other law enforcement couldn’t manage it. This film provides a valuable contrast to the 1967 movie starring Beatty and Dunaway, which portrayed the criminals with more sympathy, as well as “Bonnie & Clyde: The True Story” from 1992, both of which are quite good. The filmmakers aimed for authenticity instead of trying to pack in the excitement you’d find in something like a James Bond or Batman movie. And when I say "authenticity," I'm not talking about strict adherence to what really happened; movies rarely achieve that for various reasons. For example, Frank Hamer didn't confront Bonnie & Clyde head-on with his car—he and his team simply opened fire once they confirmed the identities of their targets. It’s a respectful recreation of life during the Great Depression and the pursuit and eventual killing of those notorious figures by two older men who were still very skilled at what they did. The film isn't rushed, unlike "Aquaman," which seemed desperate to get to an action sequence just as something dramatic was unfolding. If “The Highwaymen” feels slow or dull at times, that’s because the actual pursuit was often a long and tedious process. This isn't for viewers who need constant explosions every few minutes; it’s better suited for those who appreciate period films like "The Whole Wide World," "Cross Creek," "Of Mice and Men,” “The Cider House Rules,” "The Green Mile" and "Water for Elephants." The movie has a running time of 2 hours, 12 minutes. GRADE: B+/A-
