Terence Stamp portrays Ramsley, the butler at a gloomy mansion belonging to Gracey (Nathaniel Parker). Estate agent Evers (Eddie Murphy) is called to this unsettling house, and hoping for a good payday, he brings his wife Sara (Marsha Thomason) along for dinner, where they quickly find themselves experiencing some strange events. Apparently, Mrs. Gracey died unexpectedly, and it looks like Mrs. Evers might be next in line—whether she wants to be or not! Stamp receives what praise the film offers, mostly due to the frequent close-ups that highlight his presence. Beyond that, the movie feels weak and showcases a performer who’s clearly past their prime, along with supporting actors who don't contribute much. The story attempts to gain some depth by incorporating a theme of familial neglect, showing Evers prioritizing his career over his wife and two irritating children. Eventually, things reach a climax with assistance from the ghostly Madame Leota (Jennifer Tilly), though ultimately it’s entirely unremarkable in almost every way. The visuals are enjoyable, and Ramsley is perhaps the finest butler since Tim Curry. It's suitable enough for background viewing on television, but that's its greatest accomplishment.
