Around 1897, George Albert Smith chose to recreate a film released the previous year. His aim was to reproduce Méliès’ Le Manoir Du Diable, an earlier work depicting a young man experiencing distress within an ancient castle. Smith's resulting short is noticeably briefer than the original. While Le Manoir lasts approximately three minutes, his British-made The Haunted Castle has a runtime of just one minute and one second. However, Smith’s version immediately launches into the story with the protagonist facing disturbances. The overall impression this shorter film makes is surprisingly more polished than its earlier counterpart. It seems as though George Albert Smith incorporated all the positive aspects of Le Manoir into his own creation. The viewer feels closer to the events unfolding and gets a better view of those causing trouble for the hero. Details are visible that were missing from Méliès’ version; the special effects remained largely unchanged, with jump cuts and objects suspended by wires being the extent of the “movie magic.” The copy I've watched on several occasions is presented in color, likely Technicolor. It’s possible I’m now accustomed to this format, but I doubt I would have found it as engaging if it were in black and white. So, I admit that the added color after filming significantly helped me stay interested. I suggest checking out this short film, which is more than a century old, for a quick laugh.
