DanDare on The Hateful Eight

7/10 · Feb 28, 2017

This eighth motion picture from Quentin Tarantino draws inspiration from John Carpenter’s The Thing; Kurt Russell even notes he went sleepless during production. Nevertheless, despite the extensive dialogue—a considerable amount of conversation among unpleasant characters—it functions as an Agatha Christie-esque thriller. Set in a snowbound American West following the Civil War, Kurt Russell portrays bounty hunter John Ruth, also known as the Hangman, who prefers to deliver his prisoners alive for execution. He’s transporting Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a female prisoner with a substantial reward attached to her name, when he encounters Major Warren (Samuel L Jackson), another bounty hunter. They choose to travel together toward town, anticipating the arrival of the new Sheriff. A severe blizzard forces them to seek shelter at an inn. Inside, they find Confederate General Smithers (Bruce Dern), a resentful racist attempting to learn about his son’s whereabouts. Tim Roth plays Mobray, also headed into town for the position of hangman, and several other individuals are present at the inn. John Ruth suspects that someone is deceptive and feels uneasy. The film features ample dialogue with suspicious characters irritating one another. Tarantino intends for viewers to become comfortable before abruptly revealing his intentions. The Hateful Eight offers a disturbing experience filled with Tarantino’s characteristic dark humor, unpleasant personalities, and violence. However, it feels drawn out, and the mystery may progress too slowly initially.
