Reno on The Hateful Eight

8/10 · Mar 24, 2016

I’m not necessarily a fan of Tarantino or Nolan, but I do enjoy their films. Like with any of their movies, there's always a great deal of anticipation surrounding them, and that was certainly the case here. The film initially felt like a standard western, leading me to believe it wouldn't resemble his earlier work 'Django Unchained'. There were even discussions about making this a follow-up to that movie, but apparently the director decided the story and Django’s character didn't quite fit together, which ultimately resulted in 'The Hateful Eight', featuring Samuel L. Jackson in a significant role. I'd give it an eight out of ten; however, I felt there were echoes of 'And Then There Were None'. It wasn't about figuring out who the killer was or who would be next. The way the characters were introduced was particularly well done, and there’s a fantastic plot development in the middle. The story is set in a cabin where eight strangers are stranded due to a snowstorm. Following an unforeseen incident, suspicion grows, leading to disorder. Then we're taken back to earlier events with a flashback that reveals crucial information not previously shared, which becomes important for the film’s conclusion. The majority of the movie—about 80%—consists of dialogue, but the action sequences that do occur are quite impactful. Every one of the eight main characters, as well as the supporting cast, delivered strong performances; Samuel L. Jackson, who is clearly a favorite of the director's, really stood out because his character seemed to be on another level. The entire film was shot in just a few locations, with most of the action taking place within that cabin—it’s a movie with a small cast. Western movies are becoming increasingly rare these days; only a handful of truly good ones come out each year. In an era dominated by superhero films, something like this feels especially valuable, so I certainly recommend it. 8/10
