Many people probably aren’t even aware that this movie exists, since there was virtually no promotion and it didn’t get a theatrical release. However, I stumbled upon it by chance and decided to watch it as I usually do with lesser-known films. The film actually surprised me; the story turned out to be much better than I anticipated—truly excellent. But it does have some shortcomings that hold it back. It's from the director of 'Wild Things', another decent suspense-thriller after roughly 15 years. I recognized some of the actors’ faces, but didn’t know their names, except for Michael Shannon. The story takes place in a rural town, and most scenes were filmed in an isolated house and its surroundings. A young girl named Maryann, who moved to live with her grandparents following the death of her parents, becomes friends with a lonely, very ill boy called Andy, who has been confined to his bed his entire life. Eventually, their connection becomes a secret when the boy’s mother prohibits them from seeing each other due to the severity of his illness. But this secrecy is revealed, putting the boy in danger. What follows are unexpected twists and turns leading to a satisfying resolution. > "What's the difference between god and a doctor? > God doesn't think he's a doctor." I felt like I’d found a really good thriller here, but I was very disappointed with the acting performances. To me, the acting was the worst aspect of the entire film, along with certain scenes that I didn’t enjoy. As I said, there’s no doubt about the storyline; it's one of the best in recent times, but the screenplay felt foolish at points. Those moments should have been improved through improvisation. Specifically, I couldn’t accept how the girl first meets the boy—the situation and its development were quite silly, but they needed to happen for the rest of the story to unfold. I realize that I'm criticizing it, though not doing so intensely. If this had been a television movie, many excuses could be offered, but it wasn’t. Initially, I expected a creepy film with unsettling elements, but soon realized it was another kind of horror—a terror-horror (without ghosts, spirits, or zombies, but relying on human actions to create a terrifying atmosphere). The beginning was quite unusual, but quickly gets to the point. From introducing the characters to developing the story, it takes time, as this isn’t a short film. I wasn't bored for a moment; it kept me engaged until the end credits. Storywise, I enjoyed it. If all the flaws I mentioned were addressed, it would be easier for everyone to accept the film. I feel it is worth recommending, but not to everyone. If you’re looking for a mystery film, then give it a try. Despite what I've said negatively about it, I still can’t completely dislike it. It’s obviously underrated and deserves praise from at least one perspective. However, I can’t ignore the flaws. If someone remakes it in 20 or 30 years, I’ll be old, and I hope they correct the mistakes this film made. 7/10
