I'm curious about what goes on inside someone’s head. John Badham directed The Hard Way, with Lem Dobbs, Michael Kozoll and Daniel Pyne sharing screenwriting duties. James Woods, Michael J. Fox, Stephen Lang, Annabella Sciorra, Luis Guzman, LL Cool J and Delroy Lindo are in the cast. Arthur B. Rubinstein handled the music; Don McAlpine and Robert Primes were responsible for cinematography. The film follows a movie actor observing a tough New York City police officer while he tries to catch a serial killer called "The Party Crasher." The cop isn't thrilled about having the actor along for the ride. Considering John Badham’s previous work, The Hard Way seemed like a good fit for him—his filmography includes dependable, if not particularly remarkable, buddy action comedies. It rises slightly above mediocrity because of the combination of Woods and Fox, and some clever lines. The idea of an actor shadowing a seasoned police officer is well thought out, but the movie feels crammed with too much, even though the action and humor—thanks to several energetic scenes—are enough to keep it from becoming boring. Lang’s villain is exaggerated, although he appears to be having fun. While the film generally moves quickly, its slower moments test your patience; the mix isn't always smooth. The ending does deliver on basic action principles, maintaining suspense and ultimately providing a movie that’s just above average for what it is. It earns a 6/10.
