This action draws the ire of the town’s self-righteous women and sparks envy from a lustful miner (Karl Malden), while also posing a threat to the business of a local faith healer (George C. Scott). "The Hanging Tree," released in 1959, marked Gary Cooper's second-to-last Western appearance. He died from prostate cancer less than three years after filming wrapped in the summer of 1958. At age 57 during production, his commanding presence elevates the film; it doesn’t resemble a typical Western of the 1950s but feels more aligned with those of the mid-1960s. The vibrant scenery and meticulously crafted town set are among the finest found in any Western, appearing remarkably authentic, while Maria Schell shines as Maximilian's older sister by four years. Its merits are probably even more apparent with repeated viewings. This movie served as George C. Scott’s introduction to feature films, but his role receives limited screen time, and he overplays the part of the eccentric preacher, portraying him as somewhat cartoonish. A greater sense of depth would have made the character feel more believable.
