GenerationofSwine on The Handmaid's Tale

It’s remarkable how someone managed to transform The Handmaid’s Tale into something genuinely enjoyable to watch. What sets this apart from the television adaptation? Let me offer a clue: it involves two key elements. Have you figured it out? The TV series suffers from having too many episodes, and each one extends beyond what's needed for an engaging narrative. The HBO version from 1990 runs approximately 100 minutes, avoiding the excessive length that results in padding—a lot of unnecessary padding. It presents a streamlined and focused story without hesitation. That’s why it succeeds. However, it features Faye Dunaway, Natasha Richardson, Robert Duvall, and Aidan Quinn. These are all actors anyone would be happy to have in a production, and they were certainly desirable casting choices back in 1990. Essentially, you get a script free from anything superfluous—a welcome contrast to the TV series’ often excruciatingly long and unnecessary additions—and that script is brought to life by some of the finest performers available. It's hard to imagine wanting anything more than that.
