Antoine Fuqua’s third exploration into the inner workings of the Los Angeles Police Department is called The Guilty, and while it doesn’t quite achieve the same level of skill as Training Day or Brooklyn’s Finest, it undeniably demonstrates that crime thrillers are a genre he can consistently rely on—a point underscored by the fact that this film follows his previous effort, Infinite, which was not well-received. Departing from the typical urban setting seen in similar films, The Guilty takes place primarily within an emergency call center, though events transpiring outside still influence what’s happening. Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Joe Baylor, a police officer assigned to work as a 911 operator after being demoted. He receives a distressed call from Emily Lighton (Riley Keough), who is unable to speak openly; through his reasoning, Joe comes to believe she's been abducted and is trapped in a vehicle with her captor. The premise may seem recognizable, because as Godard once suggested, the best way to critique a film is to create another one, and that’s essentially what The Guilty does in relation to The Call (which featured Abigail Breslin as the kidnapped girl and Halle Berry as the 911 operator). Fuqua directs this story with subtlety and uncertainty. Both Joe and the viewer only have partial information about what's happening on the other end of the line, but he confidently relies on his intuition—and we’re inclined to trust that instinct too, even given his unpredictable actions. Still, if Joe were always right, he wouldn’t be in a Rescue 911-style situation at this point. Ultimately, The Guilty meets what's been called the Donald Rumsfeld test: there are things we know we know, things we know that we don’t know, and things we don’t even realize we don’t know. It is worthwhile to remain engaged to discover what falls into those latter two categories.
